Stompin’ Grounds: Where Magazine

Born in 2001 to commemorate “the unsung heroes and heroines of rock ’n’ roll, rhythm-and-blues and other forms of American roots music,” the Ponderosa Stomp has grown from a small homespun happening tucked between Jazzfest weekends into an internationally renowned music festival with a strong following all its own. The annual affair turns 10 this month with a variety of events slated citywide, from the popular Music History Conference (featuring legendary songwriter/producer Dave Bartholomew and rarely screened footage from a 1962 Fats Domino concert in France) Sept. 15-17 at the Renaissance Arts Hotel (700 Tchoupitoulas St.) to the must-see Ponderosa Stomp Concert Sept. 16-17 at the Howlin’ Wolf (907 S. Peters St.), which spotlights more than 40 musical greats, such as Allen Toussaint, Jay Chevalier and Clarence “Frogman” Henry, among others.
